We know Sir William Jones (1746-1794) more with the theory of the kinship of languages and consider him one of the founders of modern linguistics, but he is one of the important figures in English Orientalism and, together with other British Orientalists such as Warren Hastings and Henry Thomas Colebrooke, he was responsible for the educational and cultural policies of the colonial East India Company. Jones published A Grammar of the Persian Language in 1771, which at the time was one of the best grammar texts in English about an oriental language. This work, which was very well received, provided a model in grammar that later linguists followed. Jones's fame had reached its peak during this period and in scientific circles, "Oriental Jones" or "Persian Jones" was well known. Of course, this guidebook, which Jones spent several years trying to prepare, is linked to larger colonial goals, and we should both pay attention to the larger political and economic context in addition to Jones's services to scholarship in the field of oriental studies, and not ignore the various manifestations of imperialism. This article attempts to examine Jones's role in British Orientalism.
