A Comparative Review of Reflection of Pre-Islamic Didactic Teachings in Al-Adaba Al-Kabir and Al-Adab Al-Saghir, and Qabus-nama
Abstract:
Pre-Islamic kings and sages highly valued didactic teachings and moral advice which were translated first into Pahlavi and then to Arabic. Later, with the emergence of Dari Persian and texts written in Persian, didactic literature finds its way into Islamic-era Persian literature. For instance, Ibn al-Muqaffa’s Al-Aadab Al-Kabir and Al-Adab Saghir along with KeiKavous’ Qabus-nama belong to this type of literature. By analyzing pre-Islamic didactic teachings and extracting the moral teachings from these two books, the current article seeks to illustrate their similarities. Also, it attempts to prove that Ibn al-Muqaffa and Keivavous have benefitted from a single source. Based on the findings of this study, educational concepts such as rationality, honesty, shunning lies, honoring promises, and moderation are the most important concepts in Ancient Iran. These concepts are crystalized in Al-Aadab Al-Kabir and Al-Adab Saghir as well as Qabus-nama and this indicates that Ibn al-Muqaffa and Keivavous have been under the influence of the teachings of Ancient Iran and created their works under its effect.
